Modern screens for Walgett and Collarenebri town water

Modern fish-protection screens have been installed at two town water supplies in the Walgett Shire in the northern Murray-Darling Basin.

The water offtakes for the communities of Walgett, on the Namoi River, and Collarenebri on the Barwon River, both now benefit from modern screening technology.

The screens will improve the consistency of water supply by eliminating the intake of debris, while also protecting native fish in the river.

The screens were manufactured by AWMA in Victoria, using the latest in modern screening technology. The screens feature a 2mm wedge-wire mesh, with brushes to keep the screens clean.

  • The Walgett town screen uses a floating pontoon, designed to accommodate the variable water levels at the site. This was installed by local companies Nicholas Schiller Electrical and Beckwith Plumbing and Gas.

  • The Collarenebri town screen has been installed in the existing intake culvert, using a clever hinged design that allows the screen to be raised for inspection if required. It was installed by Kellec Pty. Ltd.

These screens were installed as part of the Northern Basin Toolkit, which is protecting fish across the northern Basin in both NSW and Qld.
